Whom Shall I Fear Chords

This song, also known as "The God of Angel Armies" is a classic Chris Tomlin song that is bold reminder of who our God really is. He is the God that commands armies of angels and is the God that cares about us personally.  

Musically, the song is in 4/4 time and is a medium pace. It begins with a very simple electric guitar signature lick. The chord structure is simple; however there are several quick chord changes. The chorus features several 1 beat chord changes.

The easiest way to strum this, is to play down-strums that follow the rhythm of "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and," where each gets a down strum. This will help you count out exactly when to play each chord. 

Just follow the hash mark in the chord chart to know what to play. For example, if you see 2 hash marks for a chord, play "1 and 2 and" as down strums, and then move to the next chord.

As far as the lyrics of this song, let's take a look at what I like to call the "song story" to see what is happening in this worship song. We'll start with the first verse:

Many of these lyrics are straight from scripture. Psalm 59:16 speaks of singing of God's steadfast love in the morning. 

In John 8:12 Jesus says that "Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

In Psalm 68:21, God will "crush the heads of His enemies"

However the song as a whole is rooted in Psalm 27: "The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear" 

This verse affirms different scriptures about God's nature and then moves to our response - having a Godly confidence that is without fear. Now, let's take a look at the chorus and see what happens next:

He is a friend of mine

This a a chorus of confidence. It connects the strong and mighty attributes of God with our personal relationship with Him. If he is the commander of these spiritual armies, then we really have nothing to fear. 

However, the goal of a worship song isn't to make ourself feel more confident. The goal is to assign glory to God.

The chorus affirms God's nature in ways that we don't often consider. He isn't simply loving and caring; He is an almighty and strong warrior. 

Now let's move to the next verse. 

My strength is in your name
For you alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?

This verse moves to more of a direct correlation with how we gain our confidence and how we drive out fear. Our strength is not of our own doing, and it's not from believing in ourselves. Our strength is directly from the name of Jesus. 

He is our deliverer. We might benefit from the victory, but the victory itself belongs to Christ. Because we know the nature of the God we serve, we have nothing to fear in this life. 

Now let's move to the bridge of the song to see how the song story continues to unfold.

And nothing formed against me shall stand

The bridge lyrics speak to the sovereignty of God. Not only is he mighty, but he is also in control of all things. He is able to carry out his promises because of his sovereignty, not only because of his strength. 

The lyrics here give us another Biblical reason to release any fear that we may still have. If God is truly sovereign, then what do we have to fear, except God himself?

The more we truly believe and trust in God's sovereignty, the less fear we will have. 

The song circles back to the chorus as a climatic affirmation of God's attributes. If you haven't yet tried this Tomlin worship song, you definitely should!
